It was another early morning as we met up with our fishing guides at 7a. We all grabbed a little snack at McDonald’s and then we drove the hour to our boat dock. We had 4 boats in total, including a couple of Wick’s customers. The pairings were Strasser and I, Wick and his rep, Shawn, Chris & Greg, and Dean and one of Wick’s customers. Myself, Strasser and Greg were all newbies, but everyone was fairly experienced in fly fishing. Read more
Strasser and I spent 8 hours on the water and nothing to show for it. However, we should have won the best photo as you can see below Strasser on my shoulders with a beer at the end of his fishing line. Greg caught his first fish right after lunch. Speaking of lunch, it was awesome. Our group is the Boubon & Brats crew, and ironically the guides said we were having brats for lunch. Divine intervention. Grilling brats on the banks of the Yellowstone River with 2 bald eagles flying overhead was a pretty awesome experience. The weather was the most surprising thing. With a forecast of 95 degrees, we thought we were all going to bake. However, early we had a little cloud cover with a nice breeze which was perfect. Later in the day we had strong gusts of wind, then a downpour, then thunder and lighting, and then sun again, and then another downpour. The fishing wasn’t what all of us had hoped as between all 4 boats all day on the river, we caught less than 20 total fish. Honestly, I didn’t think my first day I would catch anything as I had a lot to learn day 1. We had dinner at the 307 Bar & Casino in Columbus, Montana. Headed back to the house for some hot tub and fire pit and turned in. Tomorrow we are fishing a local spot closer to the house.
