The plan for the day was to take the MARC into Washington DC. It is about an hour train ride. When we arrived at Camden Station, we quickly learned that their had been a pedestrian hit resulting in a fatality. Due to this, the train was suspended. Since I am always punctual, we got there in plenty of time to figure out another plan. We decided to take the MTA a few stops north to Penn Station which was more of a hub, and had many more route options. Read more
We were able to navigate through the large hub and ultimately got on the Penn Line and arrived into DC 25 minutes later than we had initially planned. This is the importance of being punctual! We arrived in Union Station and walked the 1.5 mile over to the US Capitol From there we walked over to the Washington Monument passing the National Mall on the way.
Taylor reminded me that the last time we were in DC, she wasn’t allowed to just lay in the grass. So I decided that Tess and I would split from the others and we would do the additional hike over to Lincoln Memorial. In reality, all of us had been to DC previously, so it was pretty much all about Tess today… the way she likes it!
On the way to Lincoln Memorial, Tess and I walked through the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, WWII Memorial, and even hung out by the pond with the duckies. When we arrived at the Memorial, we got a couple frozen lemonades. We hung out on the top of the Lincoln Memorial and watched everyone as we enjoyed our frozen lemonade.
This is where the throbbing in my feet really started to hit. I was ok when I was moving, but the 10 miles we had probably walked in the past 2 days, really came to life. I had no choice to continue, so Tess and I headed over the the MLK Memorial. Very cool!. It reminded me a bit of Mt Rushmore & Crazy Horse in South Dakota.
We then headed back to the US Capitol to Congressman Steve Chabot’s office. Our tour began there. We took the tunnel from the Rayburn House Building over to the US Capitol. There is also a subway that can get you to the Capitol in 30 seconds that is needed for all the folks to vote. Apparently they only have 15 minutes to do that. The tour was really cool. The kids remembered a bit of it from the previous visit, but it was a first one for Tess.
We then walked back to Union Station and took the train back to Camden Yards and went to the hotel. We waited on mom to return with Brody.
Since I could no longer walk, Trevor and I stayed behind with Brody and ordered pizza and watched the Cavs beat Golden State by 21 to avoid the NBA Finals sweep, while Heather took the girls for dinner and shopping.
