Below was our route for today.
Sorry for the late entry. We got in from the Mt. Rushmore light show last night and went straight to bed. We all ended up resting for over 9 hours, well Heather not as much since Tess kept kicking here in the face most of the night. Read more
Day 2 was less driving. That was very welcome after Day 1’s long trek in the rain. It did rain most of the day yesterday, but it is suppose to be sunny all today and tomorrow. I must admit the drive seems to go faster on 29 N & 90 W (the baby autobahn). The Legal speed limit is 75mph (never seen it that high before), and the road is relatively flat. Somebody told us that it is like driving through the middle of a snow globe because you can see many miles from the left and right sides of the road. We agree.
Our first stop was at the renowned Corn Palace in Mitchel, South Dakota, . I don’t think we spent more than 30 minutes there, but since it is right off the highway, and on our way, we stopped. The most interesting thing was that they have to reapply the corn cobs to the exterior of the building each year. From there, we went onto Minuteman Missile Park. This was a surprise for Trevor since he loves everything in the armed forces. This was WELL WORTH the stop. We went on a 2 hour tour. I have created a separate page to provide all the details. If you are interested in learning about the story we learned about actual missiles that were set to destroy USSR during the cold war, click here, otherwise read on below.
The tour ended right at the entrance to The Badlands (video). So we took the 35 mile BL hwy and drove through The Badlands. (video). It was pretty cool. It was like being able to walk (or drive) on the bottom of the ocean. The kids enjoyed playing on the rocks, once again mommy and daddy were apprehensive. When you see the pics, you will agree. The area reminded me of the the Discovery show I watched a few years back called Beneath Our Oceans, where they created a visual map of what the ocean floor would look like if it was drained. Pretty cool stuff!
We then stopped by Wall Drug, and then headed the rest of the way to Mt. Rushmore, where we are currently. We will be here for a few days, and today we are going to take the short drive to CrazyHorse Memorial, and maybe do a chuckwagon dinner.
Thanks to everyone for all the messages. We love reading them, and are glad you can share in our extraordinary journey across the USA.
Check back with us tomorrow!

16 Jun 2010Love Wall Drug…mostly because of the drive to get there…Wall Drug brings welcome relief. Never have seen Crazy Horse…how cool. On our many drives back west, have never stopped in at badlands or corn palace so thanks for the video and pics. Have a great day.
