Today our schedule got a little out of whack. We told the guides to arrive around 10, but when they arrived Wick was still in bed. Then we found out that Wick’s sales rep, Shawn needed to be at the airport and the Uber wasn’t an option. I drove Shawn to the airport (about 45 minutes away) while the guys got Wick going. We finally got going at around 12pm. Read more
On the drive over to Stillwater River, which was about an hour away, Wick lost cell signal while on a business call. He signaled us all to pullover while he retreated back to find a cell signal. Since it was around lunchtime, we broke out lunch on an old dirt road. Literally we are sitting on the side of this road eating fried chicken, cookies, and chips waiting on Wick to return. When he returned, we continued the remaining few miles to Stillwater River. As we started to enter the area, it was spectacular. Quintessential fly fishing location in Montana. The pictures you see of people fly-fishing in Montana had to come from this area. We were in between buttes (basically small mountains) and had running streams, waterfalls, and amazing views around the river. When we arrived, the guides took me, Jeff, Chris, and Greg on a hike down the river. We finally found a large embankment where they wanted us to climb down. As I was making my way down on all fours (in crocs) due to the steepness, the guides said to go back up and we would find another spot. The guides clearly didn’t know this area, but they do know how to fish. Finally our feet hit the water at about 1p or so. It was a beautiful mountain stream at the neck of the river. Wick showed up a few minutes after we arrived, and he, I and Jeff spent the afternoon in the river mostly getting lessons on fly fishing (and life), and didn’t fish too much today. We returned back to the house for a relaxing evening. We grilled steaks, asparagus, and had corn on the cob. A few of ur watched a movie, and then we turned in. Tomorrow is a long drive to BigHorn River.
