Below was our route for today.
We got up, grabbed some breakfast and drove the hour to San Francisco. The traffic picked up around Silicon Valley, but I have been through much worse traffic. We arrived into San Francisco, and headed to Hyde and Lombard street (video), which is the top of the famous crooked street. Read more
We drove down the street and took pics at the end. We then drove over to Pier 39, where we would leave the vehicle for the day. It was a ridulous amount parking fee, but it was easier to just pay and move one. We walked around the Pier a short while. It was unusually warm in San Francisco with less wind then I am used to in the past. Also it was most surprising that there were very few seals out. They usually overflow at the docks on the left side of the pier
We then all walked about 13 blocks up to ChinaTown. Once we got there we decided it didn’t look as appetizing as we had imagined. We then broke into groups where Trevor and I went back to down the Pier and ate at Bubba Gump’s and Heather and the girls stayed in the ChinaTown area exploring the shopping. They also went to Union Square, and then visited the fortune cookie factory and watched the workers make the cookies. Trevor and I had a 3pm departure for Alcatraz Island.
Alcatraz was really cool. I had been there a few times, but it was Trevor’s first visit. We explored the island and did the audio tour. The stories are truly amazing about that place. Trevor especially liked seeing where they dropped the grenades during the 1946 riot, go figure… I am still amazed that prisoners lived in those 7X9 cells for decades.
The girls ended their day with an ice cream dinner at Ghirardelli. We all met back up and crossed over to the Golden Gate Bridge. We stopped at Vista Point for some pictures. The winds were really strong and the girls were freezing. Taylor was in shorts… We walked out on the bridge for a few more photos and then headed into Larkspur where we stayed the evening.
Tomorrow, Napa Valley & the Redwoods…
