Short story, is the US had about 1,000 missiles like the one during the Cold War with USSR. The pictures below show the control station in South Dakota which would control 10 of the missile sites. The control station ran as a separate little entity. They had 6 workers, 2 people in the capsule, a “manager” and the cook. The interesting thing is that at the end of the Cold War when documents were shared, the control station we visited had a red x… meaning it was one of the targets from the USSR. Talk about great intelligence.
Notice the picture below that shows the chairs on a rail system, with seatbelts. This was to keep them safe in the event of a bombing. Also the capsule was not against the ground, yet held suspended by 2 large capsules that ran the 30 feet to the surface. This was to the keep the control station functioning if a nuclear bomb would hit above.
