Since Trevor was scheduled to ref at Zane Trace High School (Chillicothe, Ohio), we had planned to all spend the day up in this area. Unfortunately, we learned yesterday that Trevor was supposed to ref then (we were at Kings Island all day), so even though he wouldn’t be reffing now, we decided to carry on with our initial plans and explore this area for the day. We tried to visit Heather’s friend Lori who lives near by, but they were out of town. Read more
We began at Hopewell Culture National Historical Park. There are several areas, but we visited the Mound City Group. It was really a spread out area of mounds which were built by native americans over 2,000 years ago. Some are buried structures, religious areas, etc. We walked around the park a bit and then headed northeast.
We grabbed some lunch and then headed to Hocking Hills Old Man’s Cave. Our first stop was climbing down an area at the base of a cool waterfall. There was a nice pool at the bottom, but the rocks were too sharp to walk on, and the water certainly wasn’t warm. We hung out there a bit with Brody and then continued through the park. We passed a “statue of rocks” which we had heard about. Apparently visitors just began stacking rocks, and making statues and it caught on. As we continued through the park, we saw deep waterhole, tunnels, caves, etc.
After hiking most of the day, we were pretty worn down. We decided to head back to the van and go home.
