Friday 8/4
The plan for today was to leave Jackson Hole and spend the day visiting The Grand Teton National Park (about 15 minutes away). We left the Lodge at Jackson Hole by 615a and headed to our 1st stop at Grand Teton National Park of Mormon Row where the famous Moulton cabins are. Read more
The clouds were out and it was quite hazy, and then it started to rain. We then realized the rain and haze have made the mountains completely disappear. Yet, we continued on to the Church of the Transfiguration – very cool. Log cabin built 100s of years ago and still standing with active church services. After looking at the radar, it looked like the rain would stop by 10 or 11a so we headed back to Jackson Hole and had a great breakfast at The Bunnery and tried to wait it out a bit. I remembered this place from a previous visit to Jackson Hole with my family many years back and it was still delicious. We then got some groceries and headed back to The Grand Tetons. Stopped by the visitor center and walked around a bit, but the rain wasn’t stopping, and mountains were still hard to see. We then called an audible and decided to drive up to YellowStone and we spent the day there. ** Check out YellowStone and we will head back down here to the GTNP tomorrow. Saturday 8/5 – Drive back from YellowStone Set alarm for 7a from our lodge in Grant Village inside YellowStone, but both Tim and I woke up around 6a. We saw that the weather and skies were clear at GTNP so we headed back south for the day. After 90 min we arrived and parked at Jenny Lake. Although we could now see some of the mountains, it still wasn’t very clear. We called another audible and decided to drive to The Teton Village. I remember seeing a sign for a road to get there without having to drive back down to Jackson and around up west. We found the road right outside of the East Entrance and it only took us 9 miles to get there. It saved us almost 2 hours round trip. The road was very narrow and not paved. Fun driving! We shortly arrived at the Teton Village. It was something out of Aspen or Vail, kinda an upscale ski community. After walking around a bit, we had breakfast at the Mangy Moose. We contemplated taking the ski lift to the top but with the haze still there, the views just wouldn’t have been worth it. After a few hours of exploring, we decided to take the 9 miles back to the GTNP. Driving near Jenny Lake there were cars parked on the road about 4 miles out. Since we went yesterday, we knew exactly where the boat dock was, so we drove right up to it. Miraculously near the trailhead we saw a couple walking and asked if they were coming or leaving, and they said leaving. We parked 8 SPOTS from the trailhead, not 4 miles. Took the 20 min boat ride across Jenny Lake and then headed to Hidden Falls. Very cool waterfall. Hike was moderate. We then proceeded to Inspiration Point. This hike was very strenuous, and check out the photo of the death stairs which were very dangerous. Got some great photos, and then hiked the rest of the way down. Took the boat back to the boat dock and then headed to Oxbow Bend. Unfortunately no wildlife there so onto Signal Mountain Summit, Schwabacher Landing. Great view of the mountains and trees reflecting in water, but mountains still had a haze. ******** Went a few other stops?? Since we are staying back in YellowStone tonight, we headed back up north around 4p. ** Go back to YellowStone National Park Day 1.
