Below was our route for today.
We left Las Vegas this morning and took the 4 hour drive to The Grand Canyon (video). Ironically we had to go back over Hoover Dam since we were heading towards the South Rim of the Canyon. It reminded me how weird the time zones are there. As you go across the Dam you are in Nevada and on PST, and by the time you get to the other side you are in Arizona and it is on MST. I would hate to work near there because you would never be on time. Read more
We stopped for lunch in the sprawling Metropolis of Kingwood, AZ. We actually chose Cracker Barrel over the McD’s and Wendy’s we passed.
We drove through the Kaibab Natural Forest before we arrived at The Grand Canyon. We went by the visitor center and signed the kids up for the jr. Ranger program…. again. We then drove to each of the scenic views.
I must tell you that Heather was quite terrified today, more so than I have seen here in awhile. It stemmed from our first picture near a ledge, Trevor and Taylor were fighting and elbowed each other and both went sliding a bit. Then after that, Trevor stepped barely off the path and slipped on an area of pebbles and went sliding towards the edge. The best quote of the day from Heather was “Hug a tree and don’t let go”. You will see from the pics below the path which typically has trees on the safe side, as well as how close the edge of the cliff is to the path itself.
The Grand Canyon is quite amazing to see. I have seen photos before, but they really don’t do it justice.

24 Jun 2010Thanks again for the pictures! These are the places I remember including the dam. Wasn’t Lake Meade pretty? I remember the color being gorgeous. Trevor, thanks for calling. I am glad to talk to you. When do you get home! I am glad you are all having a good time. Talk to you soon.

24 Jun 2010It sounds like you are enjoying a wonderful trip. Your cross-country trek brings back great childhood memories for me. My dad would plan these 3 week “adventures” with 4 kids in the car that would take the family across the country and back. If there was anything close to a “landmark” to be seen…we saw it. Blessings for safe travels and great memories being made!

23 Jun 2010Getting into warmer weather now i would guess. Given the hot here, i am still hung up on the picture of the lake and snow on the beach. I can just disappear into that scene. What a contrast between the man Vegas and the God made canyons of only hours earlier. Still gotta love that Vegas wonderland though. Have a great day there. Hope you can slip out to Hoover Dam…remarkable. Happy Trails.
