After leaving Cocoa Beach, we drove about 30 minutes north to visit the Canaveral National Seashore. This is a long stretch of land and beaches that have been undisturbed and protected for decades. We are told this is how old Florida A1A used to be. Read more
We entered the park area from the South east of Titusville. You can either enter from the North or South, but they do not connect, meaning whichever way you enter, you have to exit that way as well. It was a pretty good drive to get to the ranger station and a lot of it is 30mph. Along the south side, there are 14 beaches. The beaches from 12-14 are famously known as the nude beaches, we of course stayed away from those. We only drove as far as beach #8, and stopped to check it out.
It was quite windy since there are no large hotels or any development to shade you. The launch station for the rockets is nearby and you get a great view of that area. As we drove back, we saw a lot of wildlife highlighted by a 20 foot alligator. We were actually on a small pier overlooking the alligator so we weren’t in any danger. We also saw a Gopher Tortoise, which is a protected animal. The area kinda reminded us of when we visited Assateague Island in Maryland several years back.
On the way back, we hit a torrential rainstorm, and I mean a rainstorm. There was tons of lighting and cars were pulled off to the side of the interstate. Grammy and poppy arrived around 230a.
